The World Needs more Paddingtons

Margo and I recently went to see Paddington The Musical in London, and it was extraordinary.

The music, staging and creativity were impressive, but what stayed with me most was Paddington himself: kind, polite, hopeful and always looking for the good in people.

After the show, we had a special surprise. The actor who played Paddington came outside and spoke with us. He patiently answered our questions about how he could see, breathe and move inside the costume. He was a wonderfully gentle and gracious person—the same qualities we had just seen in Paddington on stage.

One scene brought tears to my eyes.

Paddington was sleeping alone in the railway station, with nowhere to go and no one waiting for him. It reminded me of late nights on the streets when I was homeless as a teenager.

The Brown family also reminded me of the kind foster parents who opened their homes to me and gave me moments of safety, acceptance and belonging.

As I reflected on the story, I realised that this little bear from Peru has some very important lessons for all of us.

1. Kindness Is a Strength

Paddington remains polite even when others are impatient or unkind.

It is easy to be gracious when everyone treats us well. Real character is shown when we refuse to let someone else’s behaviour determine our own.

2. Look for the Good in People

Paddington believes there is something good in almost everyone.

That trust occasionally gets him into trouble, but it also draws goodness out of people who may have forgotten it was there. People often rise to the expectations placed upon them.

3. Make Room for the Outsider

Paddington arrives alone, unfamiliar with his surroundings and clearly different.

The Browns cannot help everyone, but they can make room for one bear. Sometimes changing the world begins by welcoming one person who feels excluded.

4. Good Manners Still Matter

“Please” and “thank you” may sound old-fashioned, but courtesy tells another person:

You matter. I recognise your dignity.

Kindness costs nothing, yet it can completely change the atmosphere.

5. Mistakes Do Not Define Us

Paddington creates plenty of chaos. He misunderstands things, breaks things and makes spectacular messes.

But he keeps trying. He apologises, learns and gets up again.

A person can make a mess without being a mess.

6. Home Is More Than an Address

Paddington is searching for a home, but he discovers that home is not simply a building.

Home is where you are known, accepted and missed when you are gone. The Browns do not merely give Paddington a bed. They give him a place in their family.

7. One Life Can Change the Atmosphere

Paddington appears to be the one who needs rescuing, but in many ways, he rescues the people around him.

His kindness, loyalty and optimism help the Brown family rediscover courage, adventure and their love for one another.

Paddington arrives wearing a label:

“Please look after this bear. Thank you.”

Many people carry an invisible version of that same message:

Please notice me.
Please give me a chance.
Please help me feel safe.

Perhaps the message around Paddington’s neck was never meant only for him.

Perhaps it is also a message for all of us:

Please look after one another.
